Hairstyles - How To Do Messy

It’s time to get messy! Those stick straight styles that have been popular for so long, are beginning to look a little bit commonplace. Trendy looks are heading toward a fuller, and wilder feeling. Creating a Messy look is not as easy and spontaneous as it seems. That uncombed appearance requires work and ‘know-how’. Using hot rollers or a curling iron to put fullness and movement into your hair will work, however this often results in too much curl and an overly ‘done’ look.

The perfect ‘Messy’ look has fullness without being too full or too rounded and has movement without being curled.

Tips for creating the perfect ‘Messy’
Begin your style by using a shampoo and conditioner formulated for your hair. Apply an extra-body mousse or hair gel to towel dried hair and blow your hair dry for fullness. Then use one of the following methods.

  1. To get fullness in straight hair without creating curl, try using a crimping iron next to the scalp. Use it only at the base of the hair shaft, not on the ends and on the interior of the hairstyle, not on the hair around the front hairline.
This gives lift at the scalp and takes away from the smoothness of straight hair while keeping away from the front hairline keeps the crimping from showing.

  2. If you want more movement and curve but not a lot of curl, set your hair on large hot rollers, leaving out some hair around your face. Time the rollers for about four minutes. They should not cool. Remove the rollers, turn your head upside down shake your head while messing up the curls with your hands. Almost using a scrubbing motion. Turning your head right side up again, arrange your hair slightly with your fingers.

Finish your style by scrunching hair wax, pomade or hair crème into the ends to separate and moisten them. The amount to be used will depend on your hair texture. Fine, straight hair requires only a small amount. More is likely to wilt your style. Thick, coarse or curly hair will require up to twice the amount used for fine hair. Follow that with a light, flexible hold hair spray.

Perhaps the most important note to creating ‘Messy’ is to remember to not ‘over-style’ it. Always stop styling before you feel you are finished. One last thing to remember is that you may not run your fingers through your style repeatedly after it is styled or it will most likely wilt back into smooth and straight and common place.
