DVD Review - The Celestine Prophecy

The Celestine Prophecy is based on James Redfield’s bestselling book of the same name.

I read the book when it first came out and was pretty impressed with it, so of course I was very excited to hear that a movie was being made.

On the cover of the DVD is a question: “What if Heaven and Earth are the same place?”

And this is the premise of the movie. If Heaven and Earth are the same place then that must mean that we are connected to both, and that there must be some way to strengthen that connection! In the movie, John Woodson, our main character, takes a journey that teaches him how to make this connection. To start off, John suddenly finds himself out of a job. He then “happens” to meet up with an old friend who tells him about this “ancient prophecy” recently discovered in Peru, and that he should go there and check it out for himself.

This sets John off on an adventure through the rain forests of Peru where he discovers the nine insights which make up the prophecy. John then has to learn the meaning of each insight, and how it can bring about spiritual transformation.

The insights cover the purpose of synchronicities and how they change our lives, discovering our connection to the energetic world, working with energy and trusting your intuition (just to name a few! I don’t want to give away too much of the movie).

The movie itself is beautifully done, and has many familiar faces in it. The scenery is stunning, and the visuals are great. However at just one hour and 40 minutes I thought the movie was a bit rushed. I would have loved it if they could have expanded it to 120 minutes or even 150 minutes!

I also enjoyed the behind the scenes commentary with the actors. It’s clear that the actors all believe in the concepts behind the Celestine Prophecy, and enjoyed the making of this movie.

I would have to say that though the movie differs from the book somewhat, it still keeps the most important components, which are, of course, the nine insights. I do plan on re-reading the book myself, and will most likely watch the movie again. It’s a great family movie, and offers many opportunities for discussion of the spiritual concepts with family members.

All in all I would gladly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good family adventure movie or for anyone looking for inspiration on their spiritual path.
