Working Out in Makeup

Exercise is a must for most people. Health care professionals advise us to work out several times a week to stay healthy. It's also great for the skin. A beautiful complexion is a an outer reflection of a healthy lifestyle that includes eating right and exercise.

While exercising is important, many women live busy lifestyles. They balance their career and family so they often don't have much free time. That means they sometimes end up heading to the gym right after work without washing away their makeup. But it's important to cleanse the skin prior to working out. Wearing makeup while exercising can cause unsightly skin problems and irritation.

Clogged Pores
When you work out while wearing heavy makeup, like foundations, concealers, and powders, it can lead to clogged pores. You're not allowing your skin to "breathe" while you exercise. Clogging the pores will likely lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. So while exercising is good for the body, it's advisable to wash your face before you go to the gym.

If you're short on time, bring a pack of facial cleansing wipes with you. They're available at drug stores, department stores, and online. You can wipe away makeup very quickly and without water.

Makeup Runs When You Work Out
Perspiration can cause makeup to run. It's another hazard associated with wearing makeup to the gym.

If you're wearing mascara or eyeliner, you could end up with the dreaded "raccoon eyes" look that you get when these products run. Worse yet, they could end up running into the eyes and irritating them.

Avoid wearing eye makeup to the gym. Another option would be to choose waterproof mascara and liner instead. Test them first to be sure they stay put when exposed to moisture and won't end up in your eyes while you're on the treadmill.

If You Must Wear Makeup to the Gym
If you feel like you need to wear makeup to the gym, avoid heavy foundation or concealer. Choose a light, water-based formula or opt for a BB cream instead. A tinted moisturizer also works well.

After working out, it's a must to wash away makeup and pollutants that have accumulated on the skin during the day. Follow with your normal skin care routine.

Wearing heavy makeup to the gym could end up clogging your pores. This often leads to problems with acne and irritated skin. Another problem occurs when makeup runs into eyes and irritates them. Avoid these problems by simply washing off makeup before exercise or by choosing light formulas and waterproof products. If you must wear makeup to the gym, just make sure you wash your face after working out. Your skin will thank you for it.
