Dinah suffered a terrible head injury when Griggs, a rival of her husband, A.C. Mallett, shot her in the head. But when Dinah came to, she suffered a brain injury that left her searching for her thoughts, having trouble with simple expressions, and unable to do her job as a news reporter. The scene where she returns to work for the first time and interviews Frank Cooper was surprising. It was strange to see her trying to remember Frank’s last name - a man she has known for many years.
Dinah did not want Mallett to find out about her injury, so she confided in her stepfather, Matt Reardon. Matt helped her with everyday tasks like re-learning how to iron and use a cell phone. Eventually Mallett found out about Dinah’s condition. The bond between Matt and Dinah grew, and changed in Matt’s eyes.
As a result of Dinah’s injury, the medical bills were through the roof. Dinah went so far as to blackmail Cyrus in hopes of paying off her medical bills and alleviating the burden her and Mallett are facing. However, that plan failed. Mallett has picked up extra jobs in effort to help support Dinah. But between juggling the extra jobs and dealing with Dinah's condition, Mallett is now close to losing his own job. Frank found money used as evidence stashed in Mallett’s drawer at the Police Station. Mallet admitted to possibly using the money for Dinah’s medical bills, but he didn’t follow through. Frank indicated he had no choice but to take action against him. Dinah overheard the entire conversation and decided to come up with a plan.
Dinah planned for Mallett to catch her in the arms of Matt Reardon, hoping to make him jealous so that he would eventually leave her. What I find surprising is that Mallett bought the scheme, and Matt was able to figure it out. I have never considered Matt to be the sharpest tool in the toolbox, but for Matt to pick up on Dinah’s schemes and not the illustrious Detective Mallett is simply amazing to me! When Matt confronted Dinah and informed her that he knew, he wasn’t upset at all and actually felt sympathy for her.
After all that has happened, Mallett still loves Dinah and blames her incident with Matt on her brain injury. Mallett believes it was all Matt’s doing and that he took advantage of Dinah at a vulnerable moment. If Dinah can still plot and manipulate people, it sounds like the old Dinah is slowly resurfacing.
