Unusual Phobias

Some phobias are easier to deal with than others. Arachibutyrophobia, for example, would be an easy one for just about anybody to deal with. Others, like Geliophobia would be a bit more difficult.

Remember, when someone encounters something they have an excessive fear of he experiences rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling, anxiety, panic, terror, and/or dread.

As I stated in the above paragraph, Arachibutyrophobia, or the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of one's mouth, would be an easy one to deal with. One just has to stay away from peanut butter. Or is it that simple?

Your character has Arachibutyrophobia. He runs a large private school and is well liked by all the students and employees. Then he hires someone who is different, someone who has his own ideas about how the school should be run. Through conversation, someone lets it be known that their boss has this fear. What does he do with this knowledge?

Automatonophobia is the fear of ventriloquists' dummies. Again, it should be relatively easy coming into contact with any ventriloquists’ dummies, except maybe in your dreams.

Your character is a young lady who works in a shop where these dummies are made. She has not always had this fear, but one day something happened to cause her to be deathly afraid of them. What happened?

Geliophobia is the fear of laughter. Someone who is afflicted with this condition would not like funny movies, jokes, or comediennes. What else is there that makes one laugh? Joy can bubble up inside a person and make him laugh for no reason. A person will laugh if he is tickled.

Your character has Geliophobia, but isn’t afraid of his own laughter. He does not like to be around other people who laugh. If he is around people who begin laughing, he has a panic attack. What traumatic event happened in his younger days to give him such a fear? Write a story about it. How does this phobia affect his friendships with others?

Urophobia is the fear of urinating or fear of urine. This fear affects more men than it does women. Persons suffering from this don’t actually fear urinating, they are afraid that someone is listening or watching them while they are trying to urinate. My husband told me that he knew a lot of guys in the military who suffered from this. This problem can get serious if the individual chooses to hold it in all day long, day after day after day.

Give one of your characters Urophobia. Why is this person afflicted with this particular phobia? Did the other students poke fun at him while he was attending school? Did he have a problem with wetting the bed? Write out a scene where this particular character relives in his mind the cause of his phobia.
