Although mummies made with plain hot dogs and refrigerated breadstick dough are the favorite of most kids, I like to prepare my mummies with spicy Polish dogs wrapped in light rye breadstick dough that I prepare in my automatic bread machine. At our house, we’ve used Cheddarwurst, Kielbasa, German brats, and different varieties of the specialty sausages that are so popular right now. One Halloween morning, my kids helped me wrap biscuit dough (homemade, but canned biscuits could be substituted) around cooked link breakfast sausages. Use your imagination. Here is the basic recipe:
Halloween Mummies with Vampire Blood & Monster Slime
1 11 oz. package refrigerated breadsticks
1 12 oz. package hotdogs
Preheat the oven to 375°. Open and separate the refrigerated breadsticks. Starting at the bottom, wrap a breadstick around each hotdog to resemble a mummy, leaving at least one inch of the hotdog at the top unwrapped (for the face). Bake 15 minutes or until the breadsticks are lightly browned.
Place about a tablespoons catsup in a small plastic bag; cut a tiny hole in one corner and pipe smiles on each of the mummies. Place about a tablespoon of yellow mustard in a small plastic bag; cut a tiny hole in one corner and pipe eyes on each of the mummies.
Serve with additional catsup (Vampire Blood) and mustard (monster slime).
