The Wiccan Family

What does it mean to use the term wiccan parenting? Being a parent and being a wiccan combine, to create a unique family dynamic that I feel is beneficial to children. There are obvious negatives that go along with choosing a path less followed, but overall the final result is a more well adjusted child and one who iscapable of finding joy in the most mundane situations.

Let's look at what wiccan parenting involves. To parent in this tradition, it is important to note that we do not teach our children about spirituality as right/wrong. We teach what our beliefs are, some through everyday living (as I do) and others through a more structured approach. Along with our own beliefs, it is important to teach about other religions. Part of what makes us centered is the sense of where we belong in the wheel of life. All religions are important to the balance of that wheel and how we all interact together is an essential knowledge that we owe our children.

It is also just as important to feel comfortable within ourselves about being a minority. We are never going to be the larger voice. What we have to do is offer tools for our children to use when they inevitably come in contact with someone who is ignorant to what being wiccan really means and tries to scare them into thinking badly about their beliefs. It is difficult to be the minority in most situations. To not be part of a larger group requires the individual to feel strongly enough in their own personal beliefs that they can continue to grow despite others' opinions. This is a tool that children NEED when facing their own peers and coming out whole after the experience.

It is important to teach sacredness in all living things. To be able to find something beautiful without electricity, simulated experiences or enhanced anything is a talent that must be nurtured and loved. It is especially difficult as we grow more reliant on all things mechanical. Do not misinterpret this to mean that I shun the electronic age. I find my laptop and MP3 player an essential part of my own well being. I do, however, find it more important to see the sun rise each morning and say a blessing over my altar that my family also rises with such beauty and strength. The sunset means another blessing for my family's unencumbered rest, filled with rich dreams and peace. Here again, we find the balance that I spoke about.

In closing, children of wiccan parents must learn tolerance, inner peace and beauty in life. These are all serious and important skills for living a full life. I hope your family enjoys such a path.
