When I considered doing a spotlight on one of the characters from As the World Turns, I immediately thought of Lily Snyder. Then, I wanted more of a challenge. I wanted to focus on a character who I wouldnít immediately think of, but also whose past has some twists and turns. I think Emily Stewart qualifies to fit this description.
My first thought of Emily Stewart was of a woman who never quits on love. Letís face it, the Stewart women (Emily, Allison & Susan) have not had luck with men and relationships; specifically Emily.
Emily seems to lack self-esteem. I knew Emily was scheming when she calculated for months to seduce Tom, her then partner in her newspaper. Tom was estranged from his wife Margo, and Emily just swept in to take total advantage of the situation. Later, Emily became involved with Chris Hughes, who just happened to be engaged to her sister/daughter, Allison. This is one twisted family.
I think the most mismatched relationship Emily had was with Hal Munson. She never truly cared for Hal and just used the fact that he was a decent and honest guy. For years, Emily has sought after Paul, regardless of whether he was in a relationship or not. She always had a thing for Paul, and I used to think there would never really be another man for Emily. But the knight in shining armor appeared: Mr. Donovan.
I have made it abundantly clear how I feel about Dusty. I am the first to admit that I have many issues with Dusty, but I have even bigger issues with Chris Hughes and Emily as a couple. First of all, the age difference is glaringly obvious. The new Chris Hughes just seems so much younger than the previous character to play that role. Also, I donít remember the old Chris being so underhanded and cunning. He is purposely keeping his father sedated to avoid the truth from coming out. This Chris is almost as devious as Emily!
In Emilyís future, I would like to see Emily run her newspaper by herself, and not depend on others to make her feel valuable or worthy. It sends a better message to portray a strong character after having Emily so insecure for so many years. I would love to see Emily take her time to find true love. And since most Oakdale men are either her exes or unavailable, that means someone new would have to come into the picture.
