Florida Honeymoon - Alternatives to Orlando

While Orlando and its theme parks are perennially popular honeymoon destinations, there are loads of other fun and romantic locales in Florida for your dream vacation. Here are some resort towns to consider:
Jacksonville
Beach in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville
This city in the northeast corner of the state, not far from Georgia, is "Where Florida Begins." The St. Johns River runs through the heart of town, and visitors love strolling the downtown riverfront (plus the 20 miles of stunning ocean coastline). It's a green city, too: with 57,373 acres of parks, Jacksonville boasts the largest urban park system in the country.

Adventuresome couples can get a unique perspective of Northeast Florida on a guided Segway eco-history tour along off-road paths on Fort George Island. Or explore the localr waterways on a guided kayaking tour. Golfers are bound to find a course they like among the 72 golf courses in Jacksonville. Finally, hit the restaurants and bars at Jacksonville Landing downtown, including the Twisted Martini, an upscale entertainment and dining venue.

Daytona Beach
The "World's Most Famous Beach" is definitely not only for spring breakers. It's got a sophisticated and "soft adventure" side, too. Take a jet-boat or hot-air balloon ride, go scuba diving, rent a kayak, swim with the dolphins. Have fun renting a bike (beach cruisers) or moped and explore on two wheels. Or test your race-car driving skills at the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Then after a day full of activity, get pampered at your hotel spa. And choose from among 400 area restaurants, and once night falls, dance the night away or listen to live music at the many nightclubs and bars.

Clearwater
On the Gulf coast, near Tampa and St. Petersburg, Clearwater is known for its beaches. In fact, Clearwater Beach has been named the "Best City Beach On The Gulf Of Mexico" by Dr. Stephen Leatherman ("Dr. Beach"), a Florida International University professor who has been ranking America's beaches for more than 15 years. USA Today, Conde Nast Traveler and Tampa Bay Magazine also rank the area beaches on their "best of the best" lists.

When you honeymoon in Clearwater, it is only appropriate that you take the drive along a causeway to Honeymoon Island, a Florida State Park, for snorkeling, swimming and scouting for seashells.

Florida Keys & Key West
Enjoy everything wonderfully laid back and exotic about the tropics, without leaving the country when you honeymoon in the Florida Keys, which include Key Largo, Isamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. You can "Come As You Are" to the southernmost points in Florida -- a serene place to rest and recharge after the hectic weeks leading up to your wedding.

Accommodations in Key West and the outlying keys include charming B&Bs, luxurious hotels, convenient condominiums, quaint inns and beachfront bungalows. Go fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling in the clear waters; take a kayak out on the calm ocean; play golf until the sun sets -- and the sunsets in the Florida Keys are absolutely breathtaking.
