Sizzle and Burn

Hello, and welcome back! In an effort to clear some of this giant stack of February releases off the corner of my desk, I've got several reviews for you this week instead of the normal one or two.

Jayne Ann Krentz's Sizzle and Burn (Putnam) is our second book this week, and another addition to her Arcane Society series, which is now a thread running not only through her Amanda Quick historical romances, but into her Jayne Castle books and her contemporary Krentz romances. Raine Tallentyre has kept her ability to hear 'voices' mostly to herself during her life, and when she didn't, she got hurt for the effort of trusting. Zack Jones has no problems with the voices in Raine's head, because he has even more paranormal abilities than Raine does. But he knows things about her family that she's never dreamed, and persuading her to work with him will be a challenge when she discovers just exactly who he is, and who his family is. The attraction between them helps, but Raine is cautious. And someone wants her dead now that she foiled a serial killer's latest attempt at murder. This one has a good suspense thread throughout the story, keeping you wondering just who the bad guy might be who wants the 'witches' to die. But I was a little disappointed in the 'Sizzle' part of this one; it just wasn't as hot as some of her other stories. Raine and Zack have plenty in common, but their sparks aren't as obvious as most Krentz readers have come to expect. Raine and Zack are a well-matched pair, no doubt about it, and the cast of secondary characters make for an interesting read. I did wonder if the villain, however, was perhaps not her best? He just isn't as well-developed as I'd expected. Obviously, for me (and likely for all other Krentz fans) this one will still be a keeper, just not my favorite of her books. Maybe next time. This one's earned three and a half of Cupid's five arrows.

Until next time, happy reading!
