Decorating with Houseplants

When choosing accessories for your home decor, don't forget to incorporate flowers and greenery. They are the perfect home accent and often provide that finishing touch to make a room feel complete.

Tall plants can be the ultimate filler for that awkward corner. A vase holding branches and flowers may be the ideal accent next to a fireplace. Glass jars filled with layers of soil and topped with decorative rocks or shells beautify small cuttings that are starting to grow.

When choosing houseplants there are an abundance of choices for your decorating needs. These include flowering plants like potted chrysanthemums or impatiens; foliage plants that provide greenery, without flowers, such as ferns or ivy; and, plants that fall into the succulent category with thick leaves like jade or cactus. If you like, mix and match plants so that their many colors and textures add depth and dimension to a space.

Also consider your room's decor style when choosing houseplants as some varieties will complement it better than others do. For example, cactus go well with western or rustic style decors; ivy looks lovely in an English Country setting; topiaries enhance a formal look; orchids add a touch of the exotic to a Moroccan or tropical style; begonias provide cheerful ambience to casual interiors; and, ferns add a lush feeling to the bath making it feel like a luxurious spa.

You might also use decorative containers that help tie your plants to your decor. A blue ceramic pot filled with yellow flowers feels right at home with a French Country theme. Daisies placed in a simple watering can complement cottage style. Long stemmed roses in a crystal vase always says elegance.

Flowering plants are a simple and easy way to add a splash of color to any room. Their blooms and fragrance invite you to linger. Flowers also make any guest feel welcome when used to dress up a dining table or displayed next to their bed. Even a simple vase holding a single bud carefully placed on the bathroom sink is a small touch that will make your guests feel well received.

Houseplants improve your indoor air quality, and their greenery also instinctively makes you feel healthier. That alone makes any space feel more comfortable. Their color provides a natural enhancement to your home that brings the outdoors in.

Don't forget to include flowers and greenery to those areas that are natural extensions to your living space such as porches, decks and screened rooms. When decorating such outdoor rooms with furnishings, add a potted plant or flowers to a table or a few hanging plants along the porch. During the cold weather months these can be brought inside to add instant cheer to your home.
