I'd like to encourage those of you who are able to visit one or both of the premier orchid events during the spring on the East Coast or the equally famous West Coast show. These events are absolutely awe inspiring and represent some of the best in orchid education available in the country.
Orchids: Take a Walk on the Wild Side
The US Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian again have combined their resources to produce "Orchids: Take a Walk on the Wild Side" opening on January 27 and running through April 22, 2007. The exhibit will be at the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C. It is set up as a canopy walk -- a new way to look at how orchids actually grow in the wild. A walkway will take visitors up through a rainforest to see the plants actually growing as epiphytes. Further information is available at The USBG
The Orchid Show
The New York Botanical Garden's orchid show, February 24 through April 8, is always a real treat. It is held in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and features more than 8,000 flowers in breathtaking detail. In addition to the show, there will be orchids for sale and a large number of items from the Shop in the Garden, many with orchid-related themes. For more information, see The Orchid Show. The other major show in New York which is normally housed at Rockefeller Center has been cancelled so this is your best chance for an orchid show in New York City this year.
One of the premier orchid shows on the West Coast is the 63rd Annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. It will be held February 29-March 2 at the Earl Warren Showgrounds Exhibition Hall in Santa Barbara, California. There will be more than 50 vendors for the orchid lover to choose from. For more information, see Orchid Fever. As well as beautiful flowers, there will be exhibits of photography and art.
