The New Look of Wigs - Cranial Hair Prosthesis

In case you havenít looked, wigs arenít what they used to be. There are many Ďgradesí that go from the machine made synthetic hair to the custom made, hand tied, human hair wig called Cranial Hair Prosthesis. The most natural and highest quality pieces are designed for the person who has lost all or part of their hair due to alopecia, cancer or medical treatments. These high-end wigs are natural looking and are designed to fit special needs and individual sizes.

The Full Custom Prosthesis is designed according to specific measurements. Individual measurements are taken and the prosthesis is made to duplicate the shape and contour of the individual head. This results in a precise fit. Human hair is then hand-tied to the cap. Two or three strands of hair are in each knot. This allows for the most natural flow and controlled hairstyle. It most closely resembles natural hair growth. The hair may then be styled in a variety of ways. The color choice is more extensive since several shades may be blended for a natural appearance.

On step down from that is the Pre-Designed Prosthesis chosen from several sizes and shapes. The prosthesis is then hand-tied with human hair in much the same way as the Full Custom Prosthesis.

Both of the above are usually chosen by those suffering from alopecia or other malady causing the possibility that the hair will never grow back. Clips can be used to keep the prosthesis secure when there is some hair. When there is no hair to hold the prosthesis in place, specially designed tape or glue is used.

The Machine Made piece consists of smooth elastic webbing or woven material that stretches to fit the head. The hair is then applied with a machine. This can consist of human or synthetic hair. These are still very comfortable since the webbing allows for airflow. Although they donít offer the versatility and quality of the other styles, they are more readily available since they are cost effective.

Another option is the Hair Integration model. The base of this piece is constructed in a very loose weave, allowing your own hair to be combed through it and blended with the hair of the integration piece. This simply adds to the thickness of your own hair and creates a very natural appearance.

How long a prosthesis or hairpiece will last depends on the wearerís lifestyle, occupation, activities and the care given to the piece. They should be treated like any fine possession and cared for following the instructions given by the manufacturer.
