50 Ways to Hex Your Lover

Hello, and welcome back! My stack of March books is teetering on the corner of the desk, and the April books are multiplying already as well, so we've got to clear some of these out. I've been reading like a fiend in my spare time.

This time, I have Linda Wisdom's 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover (Sourcebooks). The witch called Jasmine, aka Jazz, Tremaine is both a 'ghostbuster' and a driver to the otherworldly. In her car lives a ghost named Irma who so far can't be cast out of her chosen haunt. Then there's Nikolai Gregorivich, her former lover and vampire cop who shows up in her life again. And someone is killing off non-humans. Jazz has been living in the mortal world for a long time now, sent there as punishment after one in her class of witches cast a spell that got the rest in trouble. Her life isn't too terrible, though Nick's reappearance stirs up old feelings better left alone. Ha. Nick needs her help in trying to track down the murderer, while Jazz tries to resist him and her own feelings. And hey, if she succeeds in finding the killer, will her banishment possibly be lifted? This one was fun, I'd even say cute. Irma and Jazz wise-crack back and forth and keep a reader entertained. I would not say it's a keeper for me, though. I enjoyed it, but I didn't fall in love along with Nick and Jazz. It felt to me more like fantasy with a romantic element, rather than an actual paranormal romance, and that's fine, if that's what you're looking for. Fantasy readers should love this one, with all of the otherworldly creatures populating the tale. For me, though, I wished for a little more romance between Jazz and Nick. And I wonder about the ending: is their story actually over, or is there more to come? In any case, this one's getting three of Cupid's five arrows. Even if Jazz and Nick's story is over, there were others banished along with Jazz, whose stories should also prove interesting reading.

Until next time, happy reading!
