Safe Haven Reminder

Newborn babies have ended up in toilets three times in as many weeks, each with a radically different outcome.

An employee left the first baby for dead in a toilet in a nursing care facility. An eagle-eyed co-worker noticed that something was amiss and alerted the authorities. While she waited for help to arrive, the unidentified nurse resuscitated the baby, who is now doing well and expected to make a full recovery. They have named her Baby Valentine, because her birthday fell on the holiday.

The second baby was born prematurely to a woman on a moving train in India. The baby girl slipped through the hole in the bottom of the toilet and fell onto the tracks below. The babyís mother, who had lost consciousness, awoke two hours later and told train officials what had happened. Railway workers radioed back to area train stations to alert the public to be on the lookout for the baby. The baby girl was found shortly after that, completely uninjured. She is in intensive care because of her premature birth.

The third baby, a newborn boy, was found dead in a middle school toilet in South Africa. A worker notified authorities and summoned medical help after he heard strange noises in the schoolís pit toilet. By the time help arrived, it was too late and the boy had died. Police estimated the baby had survived for several hours after being dumped into the pit. The mother is still at large.

I want to use this news as a reminder that there are safe haven laws throughout the United States and much of the world. If you have just given birth and feel that you canít cope with a child, please seek help at a fire station, police station, or medical center. They may ask you to fill out minor paperwork so you can claim your baby later if you change your mind. They will accept your child and get him the medical attention he needs, and you will not be arrested or harassed.

Seek help and save your childís life.
