Match of the Penguins

Ages 6 and up

Player 2 to 6 players

Playing Time 15 minutes

Test your observation skills with this fun, colorful matching game. Players study the penguins to look for those that are alike and then race to be first to grab the cards. The player with the most cards wins the game.

There are 64 cards and three wooden penguins, two black and one white. Before beginning to play, familiarize yourself with the cards because when you find a match, your actions will be determined by the type of match it is. Some penguins have the same number of fish in their bucket while others may have the same color umbrella.

One player serves as dealer and turns over cards one at a time, forming a line on the table. She also turns the cards face up away from her to give all the other players a chance to see the card first.

When you find two cards that match one of the same element, shout out the part that is alike like 'umbrella.' Now if that is the only match found, collect all the cards. The types of matches are ranked. Finding two cards with one alike element ranks the lowest.

Two cards that match several elements in color, then grab a black penguin. When you spot two cards that are identical, grab the white penguin. Finally, if you spot one card featuring two fishes in a pail, knock on the table.

All of the conditions above except for two cards that match several elements result in the player winning all the face up cards. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

If more than one match is found, then those matches that rank higher will trump the lower ones.

From lowest to highest:

Match of one element
Match of two or more elements
Identical cards
Card featuring two fishes in a pail

So, if more than one match is called, the person who called the highest ranking match wins the cards.

Match of the Penguins is a fun, fast card game that will help develop hand-eye coordination. It will also test your memory as you have to remember which action to take depending upon the type of match you found.
