Scripture Mastery-New Testament

The past couple of weeks,I have shared that when my son started high school, I was most excited that he would be able to start attending Seminary. I knew that getting to have an hour of spiritual instruction each school day would help him to make correct choices and help him to stay close to his Father in Heaven.

I was not surprised to have him love attending each school day and love the whole Seminary experience. What did surprise me was that though they have Scripture Mastery, they don't have quite as many to master as I did back in the day. Where I had 40 scriptures to master and learn each year, the kids now have 25 to learn.

I am one of those people that likes to know exactly what is different and make comparisons. So I made myself a chart and compared the list from back when I was in Seminary to the new list that my son is learning. I thought perhaps you might enjoy seeing the difference in each year and maybe you'll want to take the personal challenge to learn ALL of the scriptures from each list.

I have already posted the scriptures for the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and Old Testament courses. You will find a link to those articles at the bottom of this one. This week, I am sharing the scriptures for the New Testament course. For the New Testament, I learned that there are 10 scriptures that are on both of the lists. That leaves 30 from the old scripture mastery list and then there are 15 new scriptures to learn on the new list. If you are now a bit lost, there are a total of 55 scriptures between the two lists that you can learn and study and master. There are a couple of the scriptures that overlap each other on the lists. I counted those as different as they are not exactly the same as before.

Here is the NEW list of Scripture Mastery for the Doctrine and Covenants that the kids will be learning in Seminary:

Matthew 5:14–16
Matthew 11:28–30
Matthew 16:15–19
Matthew 22:36–39
Matthew 28:19–20
Luke 24:36–39
John 3:5
John 14:6
John 14:15
John 17:3
Acts 2:36–38
Acts 3:19–21
1 Corinthians 6:19–20
1 Corinthians 15:20–22
1 Corinthians 15:40–42

2 Timothy 3:15–17
Hebrews 12:9
James 1:5–6
James 2:17–18
1 Peter 4:6

Now, if you want to compare and add in the older Scripture Mastery scriptures for the New Testament, here is the list that I learned when we were learning 40 each year:

Matthew 6:24
Matthew 7:21-23

1 Corinthians 15:40-42
Ephesians 2:19-20
Ephesians 4:11-14
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

Now, if you don't want to take the time to compare the two lists, and just want to know all 55 scriptures, I have that figured out for you too.

Here are the 10 scriptures that are on both lists:

Matthew 5:14–16
Matthew 16:15–19
Luke 24:36–39

James 1:5
James 5:14-15
1 Peter 3:18-19
1 John 1:8
Revelation 14:6-7
Revelation 20:12-13
John 14:15
James 1:22

And finally, here are the 15 scriptures that are on the new list, but not the old list:

Matthew 11:28–30
Matthew 22:36–39
Matthew 28:19–20
John 3:5
John 14:6
John 14:15
John 17:3
Acts 2:36–38
Acts 3:19–21
1 Corinthians 6:19–20
Galatians 5:22–23
Philippians 4:13
2 Timothy 3:15–17
James 1:5–6
Revelation 20:12

Just like the past couple of weeks, this doesn't get you much except for some extra blessings for learning more scriptures. And of course you still have more material for those "When I was your age" stories. It does make for some interesting conversation around the dinner table.
