When I was at the grocery store recently, I noticed my local grocery store carried cute themed pasta and macaroni, and thought to myself they would make wonderful earrings.
I picked up a couple boxes of Disney themed
macaroni, one was Finding Nemo, and one was Pirates of the Caribbean.
I also really love Annie's Homegrown
for a project like this, but they were out of the Organic Peace Pasta and Parmesan which comes in cute peace symbols.
You will need:
Gold paint (I used gold model paint)
Ultra fine gold glitter
Spray craft sealer
10 mm gold tone jump rings
earring findings- mine are wire hoops by Elite Better Beads
2 pairs of pliers
fun shaped dry macaroni/pasta
When you are picking out your pasta for this project, pick something that has a top oriented opening that's big enough for the jump ring to pass through. These boats are cute, but the hole at the top of the mast is too small for a jump ring.
Also pick something without too much detail. I really loved these skulls, but the detail is too fine, and it's hard to make out what it is once it's covered with glitter.
The fish turned out to be perfect.
Paint one side and the edges your macaroni, then sprinkle or pat glitter on it. For me, putting the tip of my finger into the glitter jar then tapping it on the wet paint worked best. Let that side dry, then do the same thing to the other side. My daughter let it dry on a paper plate and it got stuck to the paper, when I did mine, I put it on a sheet of aluminum foil to dry and it didn't get stuck.
After it's dry spray a coat of clear sealer on it, let that dry, then turn it over and spray the other side, repeat so you've got two coats of clear sealer. When they are dry, open your 10 mm jump rings, and put them on the macaroni to make charms, then attach them facing each other to the earring findings so you have a left and a right earring.
You can also color macaroni by putting some in a plastic baggie with a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol and food coloring and shaking it until it's all colored. It's fun to make macaroni necklaces with lots of colors and shapes.
HAPPY APRIL FOOL'S DAY!
In some ways, this article was originally meant as a joke, making jewelry out of macaroni seems very silly. But as my daughter kept telling me as I giggled over it, she doesn't see the humor. The earrings turned out nicer then I could have imagined, and it makes a great project with kids.
