Judy Moody - Stink

Judy Moody and Stink Moody are sister and brother. They live with their Mom and Dad and attend the Virginia Dare School. Judy Moody is the eldest and in the third grade. Stink Moody is in the second grade.

Judy Moody loves her names because they rhyme. She is the proud member of the Toad Pee Club. She, Stink, Rocky and Frank are the club members. Besides Toady the Toad, the Moody household has Mouse, a pet cat. Judy’s favorite word is RARE which she constantly utters. She is the one who gave Stink his nickname. The full name is Stinky-Poo. Big sister calls him Stink McFink, also. When not teasing her brother, she loves to say rhyming phrases: lipper zipper, yipes stripes and ooey-gooey are examples. Judy Moody series books are for early chapter readers between six and nine-years-old.

Stink Moody is the younger brother whom Judy constantly bosses. He is an original; he can distinguish different ordors. Stink identifies objects by their smell and he can do it with his eyes close. His best friends are Webster and Sophie of the Elves. The trio has many adventures in the series. Stink Moody series are for young early chapter book readers between five and eight-year-old.

Many parents and teachers like the Judy Moody and Stink Moody series by Megan McDonald and Peter H. Reynolds’ illustrations. Megan McDonald writes the text. In each book of the series, she interjects humor and subjects of interest to young readers. Peter H. Reynolds’ pen and ink illustrations give visual clues to McDonald’s stories. Since the Stink Moody series is for younger early chapter book readers, Reynolds provides more illustrations.

One reason parents and teachers like the two Moody series, are that they capture early chapter book readers’ attention. Children want to read each book in the series. There is no violence, just good clean fun. Therefore, no censorship is needed. Okay, in the Stink Moody series the word ‘fart’ appears since he is into smells.

Another reason adults approve of the Moody series, is Megan McDonald style of writing. All of her characters use proper grammar. This is a major issue with the popular Junie B. Jones series. Parents and teachers prefer young readers’ exposure to correct grammar. They know this will improve their conversation and writing skills.

Judy Moody and Stink Moody series are for the advanced early chapter book reader. They are for the children who have already read the beginning early chapter books like the Young Cam Jansen and Junie B. Jones series. The Moody series are more than a hundred pages and more challenging. Chapters are still short, but there are more of them. Yet, the print is still large for easy reading and the illustrations remain to aid the reader’s comprehension of the story.
