Sitcom Stars and Trivia

It is nice every once in a while to know something that few other people do. It could make you a popular and entertaining person. On the other hand, it could make you as annoying as the character of Cliff Clavin on “Cheers” portrayed by John Ratzenberger. Some of these trivial facts you may have already known; some could take you by surprise.

Speaking of “Cheers”, did you know that Kirstie Alley was an interior decorator before she went on to play Rebecca Howe? She was on an episode of the classic game show hosted by Gene Rayburn, Match Game. She also was a contestant on Password.

Remember Pugsley on “The Addams Family”? His name in real life was Ken Weatherwax. He was the nephew of Rudd Weatherwax, the owner and trainer of Lassie.

Speaking of “The Addams Family”, Marie Blake, working under the name of Blossom Rock, played the character of Grandmama. Blossom Rock was the older sister of musical star Jeanette MacDonald.

Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young came close to being one of “The Monkees”. He suggested they take a look at his former roommate, Peter Tork.

Bettie Nesmith Graham, mother of Mike Nesmith of “The Monkees” did indeed invent a product she originally called Mistake Out. It was re-named Liquid Paper in 1956. It all started with tempera water base paint to correct her typing errors.

MacLean Stevenson who played Colonel Henry Blake on “M*A*S*H” was a cousin of Adlai Stevenson. Before his career as an actor; MacLean worked as Adlai’s press secretary during his presidential bids in 1952 and 1956.

Whitehall Theater in London opened in 1930. The first production was by Walter C. Hackett called “The Way to Treat a Woman”. Walter Hackett wrote plays and his wife Marion Lorne appeared in them. Marion Lorne may be better known to you as Aunt Clara on “Bewitched”.

Marion Lorne also starred in “The Graduate”. At the wedding reception, she is standing next to Alice Ghostley. Alice played the character of “Esmeralda on “Bewitched”. Marion also starred with the actress Kasey Rogers in “Strangers on a Train”. Kasey went on to become Louise Tate on “Bewitched”.

Before Jed Clampett discovered oil on “The Beverly Hillbillies”, Buddy Ebsen was originally slated to be the Tin Man in “The Wizard of Oz”. He had to leave the production when it was found that he had an allergic reaction to the silver makeup used for The Tin Man’s character.
