Emergency Preparedness

It is always wise to be prepared for an emergency whether the lights go out or there is a hurricane on the way. We tend to take these things for granted most of the time. There are simple ways to keep ahead of this and be prepared everyday for an emergency. Consider making these tips a part of your life so that you are never caught without a plan.

Since emergencies can creep up on us at any time, you must keep a first aid kit on hand at all times. In addition, make sure that emergency numbers are near the telephone for anyone to find. Make sure that smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are always in good working order. These are simple things to do for everyday security at home.

In preparing for an emergency situation beyond your control, such as a weather emergency, there are things that you can do that will be there for years and years to come. In hurricane prone areas, it is important to have shutters or some other form of protection for your windows. Once you have them, you will not have to replace them and they will be available to you as soon as you need them. A generator is also a good thing to have for this type of emergency. Again, once it is purchased, you will have it for a long time.

Keep good flashlights and portable lamps in your home at all times. If a weather emergency is arising, you should purchase fresh batteries, water and extra food. Have a weather radio and portable television on hand. It is also a good idea to store tarps and ropes in case they are needed. Make sure to have enough medications, if necessary, prior to a weather emergency. Do not store gasoline for generators. Purchase this when the emergency arises.

If you have children, keep things such as puzzles and books around so that they will have something to do to keep them occupied. Have coloring books and crayons stored away for a time like this. It will keep them from worrying about the situation.

Perhaps you have been through an emergency situation. If you would like to share your thoughts or experiences with us, go ahead and head over to the forum. The list for emergency supplies can be quite long depending on individual needs. Go ahead and share with us what you keep on hand in case of emergencies.
