Metro to Washington, DC Area Events

Taking the Washington, DC metro during your stay is the best possible way to get around the city with the least hassle. Whether you’re attending a National’s game or taking in a show at the historic Kennedy Center, you can use the metro to get you there fast and on time. Here are a few tips for traveling to the following venues:

Nationals Games
Take the Green Line to the Navy Yard stop. Then walk a short distance to the stadium. If you’re traveling during a National’s game, just follow the crowds over for directions.

Kennedy Center Performances
Take the Orange or Blue Lines to the GW/Foggy Bottom stop. When you exit the station, you will see a short row of two or three red buses standing just outside and to the left. These are the Kennedy Center shuttle buses, and they run about every 10 or 15 minutes from the metro to the Kennedy Center. You can also take these same shuttles back. Just meet the bus where you were dropped off after your performance.

Verizon Center Events
The easiest way to the Verizon Center is via the Red Line. Get off at the Chinatown exit.

University of Maryland at College Park
As you may have guessed, the College Park exit on the Green Line is the appropriate stop to visit the college. When you exit the station, come up the stairs toward the front of the metro (toward the parking lot). When you reach the landing, look to your left, then find the bus stop sign for the College Park shuttle. Note: On Saturday mornings, you can also visit this stop to attend the College Park farmers market.

American University
Take the Red Line to the Tenleytown/AU metro stop. Proceed as if you are exiting the station and when you reach the top of the first escalator, look to your left. You will see a smaller escalator. To your right, you will see a long hall. Take the escalator to your left. At the landing, do not turn, but walk straight ahead to the corner. This is the American University main campus shuttle stop. Directly across the street, you will find the American University shuttle to the law school. Take the shuttle you need.

The Smithsonian
The Orange Line will take you to the Smithsonian. Many travelers believe that the Smithsonian is made up of one building. The truth is that the Smithsonian encompasses several large museums. The bulk of them are on the National Mall. When you exit from the Smithsonian exit, you will see a large map. Use this map to help you find the particular museum of the Smithsonian you are particularly interested in. The African Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Art are the best to see in a pinch, but all are worth a visit if you have time.

With all the great things to see and do in Washington, DC, you will also find the Washington, DC metro website useful in helping you plan out next trip. Simply enter your starting and stopping point addresses and the time you’d like to arrive or depart and metro will take care of the rest. It will also include fare information.
