If you're anything like me, the more unusual the jewelry, the more you like it! Unusual in that unique exciting context that incorporates whimsy, humor, and beauty. Unusual in that it magically reveals the essence of the artist who created it. You don't find that quality in art very often. Jewelry that possesses this illusive ingredient is particularly powerful, whether it is made with diamonds and precious metals or papier mache.
I have a special fondness for papier mache. I love collecting works of art made with papier mache—wildly colorful sculptures and jewelry—and getting my hands into the pulp to create my own little experiments. I hope to soon be creating jewelry, bird houses, wind chimes, and whatever else comes to mind. I just like the whole idea of being so literally involved with art. And it's truly amazing what papier mache artists can accomplish with this wonderfully versatile medium. Artists like Tine Wiggens who I recently discovered in the Papier Mache Gallery.
The designer of the popular line of Soul Birds papier mache jewelry, Tine is also a mixed-media artist and creates 3-D collages on stretched canvasses which also utilize parts made from papier mache.
I find her story both touching and illustrative of the need to follow one's dreams. Albert Schweitzer said that success does not make one happy, but happiness makes one successful. Doing what we love to do makes us happy and success will follow. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Tine traveled the world as a photographer and graphic designer before getting married and settling down in British Columbia, Canada in 2002. She says she mustered up the courage to follow her heart and started her own business selling her art and jewelry in 2005. Since then Tine's Soul Birds have gained worldwide recognition. There you go!
A browse through her delightful gallery at the Papier Mache Gallery reveals a woman and artist who celebrates her love for nature, beauty, people, philosophy and life itself through her jewelry and art. She says she is inspired by all things around her and she loves helping others realize their dreams. Tine's message is an inspiration for all of us. For example, her Celebration Soul Bird Necklace is described as follows:
"When worn necklace will unfold magical powers of reassurance. It will cheer you up and lift your spirits, Every day celebrate that which is special to you and which you are proud of! Celebrate the big things or the little ones and let your heart be filled with joy, love, happiness and laughter to always keep you company. Celebrate life!"
