Christianity in Professional Wrestling

Does Christianity have a place in professional wrestling? If you ask former WWE Superstar Ted “Million Dollar Man” DiBiase, he will tell you emphatically that it does.

Ted DiBiase said that the WWE saw the potential in the rising star of the old Mid-South Wrestling and offered him a lot of money and fame to join their company. He told the story of his wrestling career and his lifestyle change many times to adults and youths. He told the students that even with all of the money and fame he was receiving while in the company that was then called the WWF, he still felt empty inside. He has had affairs on his wife while wrestling with the company and a friend of his who was a minister told him that he needed to come clean to his wife about them. He did and she was mortified, he went to hear his minister friend preach and when the minister made an Altar Call, DiBiase went up and surrendered his life to God.

He and his wife are still married and she never once through it up in his face about his affairs. She saw the change in him after he accepted Jesus in his life in 1992, and she decided to stay with him after letting go of her acrimony toward him and his former lascivious lifestyle.

DiBiase wasn’t the only one who sought Jesus. Another former WWF superstar and the very first WWF King of the Ring, Handsome Harley Race did the same and even created a family friendly wrestling organization called the World League Wrestling organization based in Missouri. He also runs a wrestling school there. One alumnist from the WLW is now signed with the WWE. Ace Steel started a wrestling school in 1997 and was called Steel Domain wrestling school and he has trained such superstars as Colt Cabana and CM Punk. Steel also appeared in the WWE ring on a Raw show where he played Donald Trump and had a match against Rosie O’Donnell which set up the Hair vs. Hair match between Vince McMahon and Donald Trump at Wrestlemania 23.

The Christian Wrestling Federation is another wrestling company who “spreads the message and love of Jesus Christ, through wrestling events around the world.”
Their mission is that the CWF is a group of talented athletes using amazing feats, athletic ability, and entertaining stories to share the gift of Jesus Christ. The CWF uses a unique evangelistic approach to embrace the youth of today. CWF Events are conducted in communities, churches, conferences, and festivals to spread the message of Jesus' love. God has drawn many different groups to CWF shows, telling us that God transcends any age, color, social status, popularity and spiritual stature. They are headquartered in Rockwall, Texas and they have a wrestling school there as well. The fee for the wrestling is comparatively cheaper than most wrestling schools and one of the requirements for enrollment in school is to attend weekly Bible studies.

On a personal note, it is very nice to see some positive in the business than all of the negatives out there today. You don’t have to be a Playboy bunny or degrade women to be a wrestler. You don’t have to bleed profusely either or use shock tactics to be a wrestler either. What a concept.
