A Diabetic Summer Survival Guide

Spring is gone and summer is almost here. Are you ready to enjoy the summer without compromising your diabetes. Here are a few helpful hints to guide you and help you to enjoy the beautiful weather.

1. For summer cookouts be sure to get low fat turkey hot dogs. Find low carb buns and stick to mustard for those dogs. Have a cool summer salad to beat the heat.

2. Be sure to have a cooler handy in your car or prefreeze small water bottles. On those hot summer days be sure to stay well hydrated.

3. Carry pre measured 100 calorie snacks for when your blood sugar gets low. Also be sure to carry juice boxes or candy when your blood sugar gets low.

4. Pack a pair of comfortable shoes in your car. Don’t miss an opportunity to take nice brisk walk. Make sure you have a safe pair of sandals to guard your toes against infections.

5. Keep sunscreen handy at all times. There are plenty of purse sizes now. Keep them in your car, at work and in your purse. As diabetics we need to guard our skin.

6. At your favorite amusement parks look for the ‘fresh’ stuff. Fruit, veggies and other low carb, low calorie snacks. Try to eat a healthy salad for lunch and keep on walking to keep your blood sugar in check.

7. Carry low carb protein bars in your purse so when you blood sugar gets low you get a quick boost and it’s healthy.

8. Be sure to have In Case of Emergency on your cell phone so in case anything happens family members can be contacted.

9. Take care of those footsies. After getting out of the shower or tub, dry between those toes and get wicking socks. You don’t want to find blisters and athlete’s foot to spoil your vacation.

10. If you must have a gooey, yummy, scrumptious treat, SHARE!! A few bites will solve those cravings and satisfy the need.

11. Be sure to have a wide brimmed hat to cover your face during your outings.

12. Take rests when needed. Don’t over do it! Be sure to check your blood sugar.


These are but a few helpful hints. Also be sure to tell those you are traveling with you are a diabetic and the symptoms they should be on the look out for. Keep any medications close at hand and be sure to wear any of the beautiful diabetic jewelry out there.
