Bible Verses On Rest

Rest, refreshment or repose is the quiet state of body and mind when a person is filled with clam ease and relaxes all faculties. God designed ‘rest’ to be an important requirement for the human body as can be seen from these verses.

“On the sixth day God completed all the work that he had done, and on the seventh day God rested from all the work that he had done. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all the work of creation.” Genesis 2:2,3 (Common English Bible)

“Six days you shall do your work and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female servant and the stranger may be refreshed.” Exodus 23:12 (New King James Version)

In this fast paced world where every minute used is equated with money earned or lost, most people have created a lifestyle devoid of rest and relaxation and settle in for cheap substitutes to unwind. Others burdened with cares and chores often sacrifice ‘rest’ for their own refreshment and utilize their waking hours to simply work with no time or reason to refresh their worn out selves.

“…We labor and have no rest.” Lamentations 5:5 (New King James Version)

Another lot of people with easy access to money and resources end up finding that all the comfort and luxury in the world does not really give rest. This is why news of suicides of some of the most affluent and successful people steals across the headlines so often.

“….there the weary are at rest” Job 3:17 (New King James Version).

Job here speaks about death which he supposes brings rest for the weary. Does death really bring in the rest humans long for? Where can real rest be found? The Bible unlocks the secret to find true, real and most wanted rest for every weary soul, battered in body and mind.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret…” Psalm 37:7 (New King James Version)

The rest you and I crave for is found only in God’s presence and in His embrace. The people of Israel had enough notice of rest in God who said to them,

“…My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Exodus 33:14 (New International Version)

Sadly, Israel missed the Presence of God and sought after rest in the most unlikely places of idolatry and rebellion.

“For by people of strange lips and with a foreign tongue the LORD will speak to this people,to whom he has said,“This is rest;give rest to the weary; and this is repose”; yet they would not hear.” Isaiah 28:11,12

You and I still have a chance to divine rest and repose if only we learn to turn away from whatever holds us to the world and look up to Jesus Christ who said,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest….” Matthew 11: 28 (New International Version)
