Star Ranch Golf Club

As a special treat my two Grandsonís Travis and Tyler living in Austin invited me down for a day of golf and dinner at Travis and his wife Kobyís new home. We would be playing Star Ranch located on the outskirts of Round Rock, Texas on Saturday morning of June 28. This golf course is located near where Tyler lives.

I was told to be at Tylerís home at 8:15 a.m. so we could drive over to Star Ranch when Travis arrived. We left soon after that and arrived at Star Ranch and it was such a surprise to see this large layout with club house and cart storage facilities. Walking from the parking lot which I noticed was full of cars at this early hour. I knew that this meant they were going to have a busy Saturday of golfers.

It was a beautiful summer day with a brisk wind and as we had checked in we were told that a free breakfast and lunch would be available with our green fees. This amazed me when I saw the amount of breakfast that was going to be offered. We met another golfer a friend from where Tyler works who would be playing with us. He had already been through the breakfast buffet and we soon joined him. What a treat of scrambled eggs. Sausage, hash browns, rolls plus I saw an array of cereals as well. I wondered how could the club include all this plus a lunch and stay profitable. I soon thought that is why I saw so many cars in the parking lot and golfers know a good deal when they hear about it.

We soon were ready for our tee time at 9:15 a.m. we pulled our carts up to small shed where a starter came to check out golf receipt. He motioned that we would be following the three men now on the tee box. I had to take some pictures of this lay out as the view was spectacular as you could see for miles around. It was evident that this place was growing as you could see a large area in the distance now under construction.

We started off on a course that you could tell had very good management as the fairways, bunkers, greens were in excellent shape. I was told that this golf course was built in 2001 so that is why many things looked so new, but you could also see it was getting good care. My game was going along fairly well until a long par 5 hole gave me some problems. My game straightened out on the next par three hole as my tee shot landed three inches from the pin but rolled a short distance away. I did have a par on that hole but fixing the divot where my ball landed three inches could have been another hole in one.

I enjoyed this golf course it had undulating fairways and green when made you think about every shot. There was plenty of trouble and scenic spots that kept you interested in the course. I met and visited with the drinks cart girl who said she had lived in Salado for a short time. I also visited with another lady who was driving around on the back side of the course and found out she was President of their ladies group named Jacque Ward. Since I am also President of our group told her how much I enjoyed their course. She invited me and some friends to come up sometime. She gave me her email address and telephone number as I plan to approach some of my friends to play this course on a Tuesday since that is the day our course is closed.

It was a great time being invited for golf with my grandsonís and this course was a wonderful surprise. I do plan to go back again plus will let our Director of Golf know just what is being offered just a twenty minute drive South from Salado. With golf courses at a maximum around Central Texas we need to be competitive and offer golfers a good deal or they will find out for themselves where the best deal is located.
