Sea Witch

Hello, and welcome back! I've been digging hard into these July romances here on my desk, but I'm also looking ahead: there are a lot of good books coming in now for late summer and fall already, and some I really can't wait to dive into. However, I still have a dozen or so July books to finish first, so all those September and October romances must wait a while.

This time out, I have Sea Witch (Berkley) by Virginia Kantra. Selkie Margred lost her husband/mate a long time ago, and she needs to scratch an intimate sort of itch, so she heads ashore to do it. Caleb Hunter is the police chief on the little island of World's End, Maine, and usually the worst thing he has to deal with are rowdy teens. When he meets the intriguing woman on the beach, their attraction is immediate and scorching. But she disappears and doesn't return for a very long time, leaving Caleb to wonder what he did wrong. And where did she go? Then Caleb has bigger problems when a murderer starts plying his trade on the island, so that his job is a whole lot harder all of a sudden. Maggie knows she can't stay in Caleb's world forever, but he makes her wish she could spend more time there than she'd initially intended. It looks, however, like the killer might be after her, and Caleb will do almost anything to keep her safe, despite the secrets she keeps. I'm a big fan of Virginia Kantra's work, and I really liked this story, which is just the start of a new series. Along with Caleb and Maggie, readers get a great supporting cast, some of whom we'll see again in the next installment, as well as a bit of suspense with the murderer. And the conflict between Maggie's world and Caleb's is difficult for them to overcome; I mean, really, how do you manage to make a relationship work when one of the pair lives in our world and the other lives in the sea? It's a bit of a challenge, and one that Kantra is more than up to handling. This one gets four of Cupid's five arrows. I can't wait for the next one!

Until next time, happy reading!
