The Blue Grass Council of the Blind, located in Lexington, Kentucky, provides information, education, advocacy, and referral to blind and visually impaired adults in Fayette and surrounding counties.
The Blue Grass Council of the Blind seeks to promote awareness of the abilities, rights, and specific needs of blind and visually impaired people. BGCB encourages and motivates individuals with vision loss to become productive, involved citizens in their community. The Council educates the public about the needs, aspirations and achievements of the visually impaired.
The Blue Grass Council of the Blind is celebrating 30 years of service to blind and visually impaired adults, their families, friends, caregivers and guardians. Services offered by BGCB include:
* peer counseling;
* referral to appropriate agencies and programs that assist individuals in their adjustment to blindness;
* educational and social activities;
* advocacy services for the blind; and
* a speaker's bureau to promote the potential of blind and visually impaired adults within the community.
BGCB offers demonstrations of many aids, appliances, and software specific to the needs of blind and visually impaired adults. Catalogs and brochures describing aids and devices that can be purchased directly from suppliers throughout the United States are available from the BGCB office.
The Blue Gras Council of the Blind is a regional affiliate of the American Council of the Blind. The Council publishes a quarterly newsletter in large print, on cassette tape, and via email. The newsletter is free upon request, and it incldes information about BGCB activities, current legislative actions affecting the blind, and other items of interest and activities within the community.
