Sewing for a College Dorm Room

Going off to college as a freshman can be both exciting and daunting not the least of which is what to bring to the dorm room? The college will have rules and limits ranging from what colors you can paint the walls to how many electrical appliances can be plugged in the room at one time.

When planning to decorate a dorm room think about roommates and how much room you will actually have to make the space the student will have private, uniquely personal and restful as well. Most colleges will inform to bring only the essential items at the beginning of the semester however the dorm room will be home for most of the upcoming school year so it is nearly essential to make it as comfortable as the college bound's own bedroom from the start.

To make unique pillow covers, cut two of the same or coordinating fabric colors or bandanas 17" square and two of harmonizing colors 19" square to make into different sized pillow covers. Sew right sides together, leaving an opening for pillow insertion. Insert the appropriate size pillow form and slipstitch the opening closed.

For a colorful old fashioned theme, use red, white and blue bandanas to cover a lamp, photo frame or pillows then add a fabric memo board or wall organizer for coordinating fun.

Create a private space by making a fabric folding screen or room divider. Both are ideal for dorm rooms, as they define a visual private space, function as personal movable partition, and one that hides clutter.

Consider lining a wicker basket with the same fabric for catch-all essentials. To make the fabric liner, turn the basket upside down and lay enough fabric wrong side out to over the basket plus more for hemming. Pin closely against the four corner sides of the basket. Remove the fabric and sew just inside the pinned area. Hem the top all around to neaten the edge at the same time creating a casing for a drawstring. Leave a one-inch opening to draw the string through. Insert liner into the basket, draping the edges over the basket, insert the drawstring through the casing opening and tie ends tightly.

Sewing for your off-to-college student will allow that touch of home to go with them.

Sew happy, sew well.
