My Wicked Enemy

Hello, and welcome back! Our vacation week has gone by very quickly, too quickly, I'm afraid, and I didn't get nearly as much reading done as I'd hoped. Nonetheless, I still have a handful of books to share with you, not to mention the rest of the August books for me to finish reading before I get to dive into the September romances that are stacking up here on my desk.

This time out, I have Carolyn Jewel's My Wicked Enemy (Grand Central), to kick off a new series. Carson Phillips is escaping Alvaro Magellan when she meets up with the demon Nikodemus, whose own plans for her aren't much nicer than Magellan's. At least, not to start off. But Nikodemus finds that the witch on the run from his own enemy might come in handy. At least, once she realizes just what she is, and exactly how powerful. But in the meantime, things could get messy. When I picked this one up, it sounded intriguing. I mean, really, powerful witch meets up with sexy demon who wants to kill her. Could be good, right? I kept putting it down, however, once I'd started to read it. And picking up other books. This one somehow didn't grab me in the right way to make me want to devour it, or even to keep plodding through in one sitting. It took me days to read this one, many days. Perhaps it was just me not being in the proper frame of mind to enjoy this one, but this imaginary world just didn't feel believable to me, and some of the names of the characters really rubbed me the wrong way. In the same wrong way as the names in J. R. Ward's current series of books rub me the wrong way. I'm afraid I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as I'd hoped. And definitely not enough to call it a keeper, or even a book I'll reread to see if I like it better the second time around. Carson and Nikodemus have potential, but they didn't make me fall in love. I'm borrowing only two and a half of Cupid's five arrows for this one. I think I'll skip the next book in this series.

Until next time, happy reading!
