With the moss rose and flowering purslanes, you can choose from so many varieties. Here are just a few.


Margarita Series

These are improved varieties of moss rose. These plants can be grown from seeds. Space them about eight inches apart in the garden.

Very free flowering, these are quicker to bloom than some varieties. They start blooming about three months from the time the seeds are planted.

Margarita plants continue to bloom for months in a sunny garden. Very drought and heat proof plants, they’re also an excellent choice for containers as well as for flower beds and borders.

The shapely, branching plants remain neat and tidy. Margarita plants have upright stems that form a neat mound. The plants are only three or four inches tall. However, they can spread to be over 1½ foot across.

Margarita Peppermint is pink with tinges of dark fuchsia. Margarita Rosita, which was named an All-America Selections bedding plant winner in 2001, this has vivid, fuchsia-toned rose blossoms.

They feature masses of huge, semi-double blooms that have a ruffled appearance. The blossoms are over 1½ inches in diameter. These come in a range of colors, including both pastels and hot colors.

The pastels are cream and apricot. The vivid ones include orange, yellow, scarlet, and fuchsia. There is also a Margarita seed mix.

Moss rose seeds should be planted on the surface. Then, just barely cover as they need light to germinate. These will germinate in around one to two weeks. Once the seeds are planted, keep the container at 59 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Portulaca Sunnyside Mixed
This series features very uniform, vigorous plants. Grown from seeds, the Sunnyside plants are one of the best non-hybrid portulacas that are available. These reach about five inches in height.
The blossoms close earlier during the day than those of most hybrids.
Most, but not all of these seed-grown plants will have double blooms.
The seed mix features a wide range of flower colors. These include white, pink, coral, lemon, orange, flame, rose, gold, yellow, and pink.
