Floral Ideas for Fall

Fall is a wonderful season for floral design. It brings new colors and interesting plant materials.

For fall we can use all sorts of non-traditional containers for our arrangements. Pumpkins are one example. So are pumpkin-shaped terra cotta pots. The Gardener’s Supply catalog has a very attractive ceramic pumpkin planter. Since it is leakproof, it would be ideal for fall floral designs.

There are also attractively painted fall tins. These are decorated with suitable autumn colors and motifs.

Metal wall pockets are just great for fall floral designs. Typically, these are painted. However, some are plain.

Non-seasonal containers also work well. For example, white woven baskets can be used throughout the year. Just add autumn ribbons and bows.

Some floral designers like to use special seasonal vases and containers for
fall. However, this is optional. There are ways to use ones you already have. For example, wrap them with some fall fabrics. Or glue fall foliage to the outside of the vase.

Fall is a great time to indulge in some new topiaries. Rose hips, berries, and fruits are just perfect. These can be either fresh or dried. For fall, use appropriately colored ribbons to wrap the stems of the topiary.

For a touch of seasonal color, try painting some stems of curly willow or similar materials. A pumpkin-toned orange seems a little too vivid. However, a burnt orange or sienna would be perfect.

Besides curly willow, other related everlasting stems are available at craft stores. These can be decorated with craft paints. Read the paint label to be sure it is labeled for wood or porous materials. Ones intended for ceramics or glass won’t work for this project.

Create some baskets of fall flowers to hang on doors and entryways. For indoors, the Kirklands’ Wood flower sacks are just delightful. This is a fashionable way to display flowers on door knobs, doors, and arches. These attractive fabric pouches come in a range of colors and patterns. Made in America, they have a leakproof lining.

Raffia is a very adaptable material. It is ideal for fall. Being neutral, it works with most any kind of seasonal floral.

Fall floral arrangements can be as simple or elaborate as your budget and time allows. Many of the materials we need are free in our own backyards. Richly colored fall foliage is the best example. Just cut some stems, mixing and matching the colors to fit your needs.

So far as fall colors are concerned, a broad range is suitable for this season. These include plum, purplish-red, maroon, cranberry red, burnt orange, sienna, deep gold, and rust.

If a green is needed with fall foliage, a sage green works very well.
