Lapel – This term refers to the section of a garment that rolls or folds back above the front closure; most commonly found on jackets and coats.
Lining – A lining is a secondary layer on the inside of a garment or other sewn item such as drapes. Linings are added to hide seams and other construction elements especially in garments where the inside might be visible, for example, a jacket. Lining fabric is typically very light weight and is smooth to allow for ease of movement.
Machine embroidery – This is the machine variation of the embroidery process where the decorative stitches are made using a sewing machine rather than by hand. Almost all modern sewing machines aside from the most basic models have at least several specialized stitches that can be used for machine embroidery such as the satin stitch or zig-zag stitch. There are also specialized embroidery machines that can create detailed and complex images.
Mend/ing – The act of repairing a hole, tear, split or other defect in a sewn (or otherwise constructed) item. Mending can be as easy as re-stitching a seam, either by machine or hand, or the slightly more complicated task of repairing a hole by filling it with stitches or covering it with a patch.
Mitering – This is a seaming technique used on corners to reduce fabric bulk and improve the look of the finished item. Rather than being sewn on a 90 degree angle, the seam instead runs from the point of the corner to the inside edge. Think of a picture frame, how the frame pieces are put together. Mitering is most frequently used when applying a binding such as on a quilt. It can also be used for a decorative effect. An article from Threads Magazine fully explains how to Create Perfectly Mitered Corners.
Muslin – The term muslin has two meanings. It can refer to a type of light-weight loosely woven cotton fabric that is frequently used in quilting. The term muslin can also refer to the creation of a test garment for fitting purposes. Muslins are often made using, you guessed it, muslin.
