Warrior

Hello, and welcome back! The weather here is cooling down a little again, which is good. I keep hoping that fall will 'stick', but then it warms up again. It'll be nicer by this weekend, if a tad chilly, but that suits me now. I'm in the midst of preparing for a conference next weekend, and have been putting off the shopping that I hate by reading. I'm nearly through the October books already.

This time out, I have Cheryl Brooks's Warrior (Sourcebooks). This is the second in her 'Cat Star Chronicles' series, and this time, the witch Tisana gets a visit from a former lover Rafe, who's brought her a slave to heal. This slave is not from her world, but it doesn't take much effort to figure out why Rafe's wife was intrigued by him. Leo, as she calls him, is quite attractive once he's cleaned up, and, once he's healed, he's also quite a vigorous lover. Tisana has many abilities as a witch that others do not, one of which is speaking with animals, which gives a reader an unusual cast of secondary characters, since, for much of the early portion of the story, Tisana and Leo are alone at her cottage except for the animals. Then Rafe returns to her when his sons are kidnapped, and Tisana and Leo join him on his quest to bring them home safely. As with the first book in the series, this one is told in first person. I still prefer third, as it's nice to get inside someone else's head sometimes during the telling of a story. In this one, there isn't as much urgency to their mission, not as much danger to their relationship, which makes this one a bit less compelling than its predecessor. Still, Tisana's animal friends liven things up through much of the story, and then there's always the steamy sex that she and Leo engage in every chance they get to keep a reader turning pages. But if you're looking for something a little deeper, this might not be your best choice. It's a light, pleasant way to spend a few hours, but I didn't find this one keeper, I'm afraid. I liked the first book better. This one's earned only three of Cupid's five arrows.

Until next time, happy reading!
