Some Quilt Books for Gardeners

Garden quilts are eye candy. They bring the beauty of the garden indoors for gardeners to enjoy throughout the year. Here are some inspiring books with garden quilt projects.

“A Year of Flower Blocks” by designer Jodi Warner was released by The House of White Birches. For each month, this features a delightful mini quilt. Most of these projects combine patchwork and appliqué techniques.

Only fifteen inches square, these treasures can be used as wall hangings, banners, and table toppers. By combining several of the blocks, you can also create larger quilts, wall panels, and table runners. These projects offer a refreshing approach to seasonal home decor. For September, there’s a gorgeous basket of purple asters. For October, various shades of orange are used as borders for gorgeous purple thistle blossoms.

each project, this has full size appliqués, layouts, a list of supplies, and step by step, color illustrated directions from start to finish. This also explains how to build a display board for displaying the flower banners.

“Bodacious Appliqué A La Carte” by Margie Engel was released by the American Quilter’s Society. From cover to cover, this features nine projects and techniques that will delight the hearts of gardeners and nature lovers.

Using motifs from nature, these wall hangings are in a range of sizes. The author shows how to enhance your flower and foliage appliqués with lifelike embellishments using various techniques, such as stitching, markers, and beads.

The author covers four methods of appliqué with full color, step by step directions from start to finish. This has full size, ready to use appliqué patterns for each project. It features many popular flowers, such as irises and poppies along with less familiar ones like jack-in-the-pulpit. The designs also feature lots of foliage, birds, and other wildlife.

“Kaffe Fassett’s Country Garden Quilts” from Taunton Press features 20 unique floral designs from Rowan for patchwork and quilting. These garden quilts are made with Fassett’s signature fabrics from Rowan. This book enables gardeners to create museum-quality garden quilts. The lush color photos display the quilts in gorgeous garden settings, such as among the topiary of Great Dixter.

For each project, there are complete, easy to follow, color illustrated, step by step instructions with pattern templates, color layouts, and a list of fabrics. With projects for all skill levels, these designs are mostly patchwork with some appliqués.

This book also covers all the basic quilting techniques. The designs include a knot garden, flower baskets, and other garden themes.

“Skinny Quilts and Table Runners From Today’s Top Designers” was edited by Eleanor Levie. Published by Martingale/That Patchwork Place, this features 15 projects from renowned designers, including Kaffe Fassett. A number of the projects feature garden motifs, including numerous kinds of flowers as well as foliage and vines.

Among the projects are both appliquéd and pieced designs. These quilts reflect a range of skill levels with many being suitable for novice garden quilters. There are designs to suit every taste.

For each quilt, there is an introduction to the designer and his/her quilt, a list of materials, a cutting chart, color illustrated, step by step directions, appliqué templates, and color illustrations of the layouts. A color photo shows the completed quilt beautifully displayed in a seasonal setting. This also covers all the quilting basics. These small quilts can be used any number of ways from mantle scarves and wall quilts to table toppers.
