In 2008, Fr. Denis G. Wilde from Priests for Life gave the homily at a local parish. He asked why call it pro-choice? Why not call it what it is, pro-abortion? And when you think about it, he is right. I am pro-life because I can choose to be so. Doesn’t that make me pro-choice also? I think so. I am pro-choice and value my right to choose to be pro-life. I am not pro-abortion.
Fr. Wilde compared those who say, “This is my body,” to Jesus who said those very same words when he instigated the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The difference is Jesus was giving of himself for us. He acted selflessly for us, through his love for us. Our society is a me, me, me society. What’s in it for me? Abortion fits into that mentality. It’s my body and I’ll do what I want. Who cares if a poor innocent child doesn’t get the right to live because of it?
I truly don't mean to sound harsh, but the reality is we are talking about life and death. Choosing abortion means choosing death for the unborn who are innocent and deserve the right to live.
Consider these statistics.
In the United States alone there are approximately 4,000 abortions performed every day. Worldwide there are about 115,000 abortions per day. That equals close to 42 million abortions per year worldwide. 42 million human beings who are sentenced to death even before their lives begin.
Yes, I know the argument about when life truly begins. Is it at conception or not? Fr. Wilde said he doesn’t think life begins at conception, he knows it does. And I wholeheartedly agree with him.
Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.
God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.- Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2271
Life begins at conception. That is a scientific fact. After all, if something isn’t alive it doesn’t grow. From the moment of conception a human fetus grows inside the mother’s womb. If life didn’t start at conception, that wouldn’t be the case. Expectant mothers never refer to a human fetus as merely a fetus. Most expectant mothers say they are having a baby or expecting a baby. It’s a baby. A life. A human life. Abortion kills that human life. How can that be right?
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you…"- Jeremiah 1:5
Fr. Wilde said those human beings who are lost because of abortion go to heaven. Why wouldn’t they? Our faith teaches us we are not dead after our earthly death. Because of Jesus we have eternal life. Aborted human beings have souls too and they are completely innocent, so it only stands to reason that they go to heaven. Fr. Wilde also said those little angels love their mothers. Even though their mothers aborted them, they still love them.
