Night Secrets

Hello, and welcome back! It's rather an ugly day here, rainy and chilly. I've just had a nice bowl of soup, and am thinking about which of the rest of the November books still here on my desk will be my next reading selection, though I have to say, there are only a few still in the stack that I really want to pick up, and I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised by one or more of the others still waiting to be read. I'm not, however, holding my breath.

This time out, I have the latest from Cherry Adair, Night Secrets (Ballantine), the second in her new paranormal T-FLAC trilogy. This time, Lucas Fox winds up wounded on a beach and uses Sydney McBride's bungalow on an expensive spa/resort to hide in. Sydney is there just for a story, having undergone plastic surgery for her book, a surgery she fully intends to reverse later. But the naked, bloody man who's suddenly in her cottage is intriguing, and the writer in her can't resist the 'what-ifs' he presents. Like, what if he really is a wizard? What if there really is a secret government agency using wizards? What if he really was after a bad guy when he landed on her beach? What if she could help him in his mission? I wanted to like this one more than I did, I'm afraid. Sydney didn't grab me like some of Adair's other heroines have. Lucas is sexy, strong and tries hard to do the right thing. But his feelings for Sydney keep getting in the way of his mission. Even when she does something that threatens him and his world, he still can't be too angry with her. Lucas I liked, a lot. But I didn't love the resolution of this one either. This one just wasn't up to Adair's usual standards of excellence. I'm hoping for better in the third installment of this trilogy. For now, though, this one gets only three of Cupid's five arrows. If it weren't part of a series, I probably wouldn't keep it.

Until next time, happy reading!
