Phillip Spaulding

Could it be true? Is Phillip really coming back? This is undoubtedly the biggest soap news in the coming year.

Fans have been waiting four years for Phillip’s return. Phillip is the character we love to hate. If Phillip is returning that will give Guiding Light a boost from the mundane storylines. I think this is brilliant marketing by Guiding Light. With major characters leaving (Harley, Gus, Cassie) there is a big void. And it’s apparent when the major storyline centers on the Spaulding and Lewis battle. Guiding Light has had very little variety, and this news breaks the mold.

When Phillip left Springfield, he was in one word: insane.

Philip kidnapped children, faked his own death, and spawned a daughter who is just as crazy as he is. But I wonder, with Philip's return, is the role of Harley going to be recast? If Phillip is returning, he will want to raise his son Zack. Harley’s family will try to stop Phillip from seeing Zack. Philip will fight for custody, despite his mental state. And as we all know, the Spauldings usually get what they want. If there is a custody battle, I can’t imagine Harley not being involved.

Another obvious twist to Phillip’s return is the family company. Phillip will undoubtedly throw a wrench into Alan and Lizzie’s plans for Spaulding. Phillip craves praise from his father. Philip's drive to receive his father’s acceptance far outweighs any hate he may feel toward Alan.

Over the past few years, Guiding Light storylines have been lackluster. The “new look” Guiding Light presented was received with mixed reviews. And with major characters leaving, it has prompted fans to wonder, what’s happening to Guiding Light? Fans across many message boards are indicating how happy they are to hear of Phillip’s return. This just may be the storyline that brings back many GL fans.
