Keep the Poof in Your Hair

Is your hairstyle flat on top? Fashion dictates that even very straight hair styles show some fullness – or poof – in the crown. Many of us start out the day with stylishly poofy crown only to realize that some time during the day our style went flat. The problem is that gravity and the weight of the hair pulls out the poof. If, like many of us, you happen to have a cowlick right in the center of the crown, it causes more problems. Hair that splits at the crown often seems impossible to keep poofed.

I tried out three products that proved helpful in solving the flat hair problem.

Hot Sets 22 by Redken
You can use this product on damp or dry hair. I prefer the latter. Dry your hair using styling mousse or gel for body. Take a section of dry hair at the crown and spray it lightly with Hot Sets 22. Use a large curling iron to ‘set’ the section into a large curl. Pick up another section of hair and repeat the process until you have covered the crown area, spraying only one section at a time. Separate and smooth the curls with light use of your fingers or a comb. Gently smooth the hair, being careful not to comb out the body.

Root Lift by Pureology
This product is suggested for use on damp hair. Spray it from the roots to the ends. Blow it dry with a round brush. If you feel that you still don’t have enough body, spray a small amount at the root area only and dry the section with your blow dryer set on low. If your hair still doesn’t cooperate in staying full, use a small amount of back-combing (also called teasing) at the root area of the crown. The Root Lift gives it gripping power. Spray the back-combing with hair spray and gently smooth the hair over the top to conceal the teasing.

What a Tease by Sexy Hair
This is an interesting product. It is instant teasing in a can, without having to know how to tease. It has the feeling of a firm teasing (back-combing) in the hair.

When I used it, I had dried and styled my hair. I lifted a large strand of hair at the crown of my head and sprayed a small amount at the root area. I held the hair up for a minute, allowing it to dry slightly, then pulled pieces of the strand apart at angles, while still keeping the hair up in the air. There are fibers in the product that attach to each other and to the hair. I repeated this procedure all around the crown and top of my head. The product dried firmly at the root of my hair. It was strong enough that I could brush over the top to thoroughly smooth the hair. The product stayed in and held up to provide fullness. After I smoothed it, it still felt like a firm teasing. It stayed in all day. In the evening I manipulated it with my fingers enough to break up the product and soften it but my hair still stayed full. The product came out easily during my next shampoo.

No more flat head. These are only a few of the products available to keep the poof in your hair.
