This Memorial Day, first of all, letís remember the importance of this day. This is a day, which by no means should be the only day, that we stop to honor those brave men and women who have sacrificed for our freedom. Please take a moment with your family and friends to thank our freedom fighters, especially if you are honoring a loved one.
To do this holiday justice, letís honor Earth as well. We enjoy our planet most when Earth is healthy! These simple and easy tips will help us all to reduce our carbon footprint this Memorial Day weekend.
First, with all of the clothing, furniture, and other sales happening this weekend, there tends to be an increase in driving, and thus carbon emissions which is not at all good for the air we breathe. Letís make an effort to bike, take public transportation, carpool, or to decide we donít need all of those sale items this weekend.
Second, eating with a lot of family and friends is delicious and fun. The easiest way to green our eating is to purchase organic produce from local farms and farmerís markets. Be sure that each person contributes just enough food but not too much to avoid wasting food. If there are leftovers, green your soil by adding the produce scraps to your compost piles.
Third, if you havenít already, invest in an electric lawn mower and use that starting Memorial Day and every day from then on to trim your lawn. Show this off to your Memorial Day guests so they too can purchase an electric mower and contribute to cleaner air as a result.
Fourth, there is no need to clean up before your guests arrive or after they leave with cleaning products made of chemicals. Shaklee makes great cleaning products that do not have chemicals. Or, simply mix baking soda and vinegar to create your own healthy and effective concoction.
Last, but not least, start a Memorial Day tradition either in your family, neighborhood or entire hometown to plant a tree in honor of our brave soldiers. This tradition will not only honor those who mean so much to us, but will also carry on a legacy of cleaner air and health as well.
