Those with cutting gardens can choose from many new varieties in 2009. Here are just a few delightful new cut flwoer varieties that can be grown from seeds.
For 2009, Burpee is introducing Kuruma Corona crested celosia. Reaching 2˝ to 3˝ feet in height, this annual produces lots of stems for cutting and drying. The blooms are a unique bicolor with swirls of red and yellow forming unique patterns. The flower heads are very full.
Fireworks globe amaranth is by far the most unusual cut flower you’ll find. This is a new variety from Burpee. The tips of the deep pink blooms are yellow. These annuals will bloom throughout the summer. Use them as a cut and dried flower. The strong, sturdy stems can reach three to four feet in height.
For 2009, Burpee is offering several new varieties of cosmos. These annuals would be perfect for cutting gardens. Rose BonBon cosmos is a pompom type with very frilly petals in a deep rose. This grows to about four feet in height.
Psyche White cosmos is named for the exquisite, lush, double white blooms. The plants are about three feet in height.
Antiquity cosmos from Burpee has old fashioned looking single blooms. The multi-colored petals have a blush of pink on a mauve and copper background. The plants grow to about two feet tall.
Burpee is also offering its own mix of purple coneflower or Echinacea. The Paradiso Mix color palette extends from creams and pinks to various purples and wine-red as well as hot-toned oranges and yellows. In addition to a range of colors, Paradiso also features various types of petals. These include exquisite, spoon-like ones as well as the traditional ones that tend to curl downwards. Recommended for zones four through nine, Paradiso plants are usually 2˝ feet in height. They’ll produce lots of stems for cutting during the summer and fall months.
For 2009, Stokes is offering a number of new larkspur or delphinium varieties for cut flowers. Percival is a new addition to the Benary’s Pacific Giants series of larkspurs. This can be grown as an annual or perennial. The seeds can be planted early indoors for quicker flowering.
Though Percival isn’t a new addition to the series, the seeds have been unavailable for some time. The tall flower spikes are literally covered with delicate white blooms. These have a prominent black center called a bee.
Cannes is a new series of larkspurs for cutting. Available from Stokes, this is grown as an annual. Unlike some larkspur varieties, these plants are 100% doubles. The stems are up to four feet tall. Cannes is sold in three separate colors. These include Rose Stripe, Lilac, and Deep Blue. The plants bloom about four months from the time the seeds are planted.
