Cutting Garden Catalogs

Those with cutting gardens can choose from a number of fine seed and garden catalogs. These include the following.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seed

This company specializes in non-genetically modified untreated seed of open pollinated, non-hyrid and heirloom varieties. The seeds are available through the catalog as well as garden centers and nurseries.

In addition to vegetable seeds, they also sell herbs and flower seeds. The flower section of the catalog is devoted to traditional cottage garden varieties, many of which are used for cut or dried flowers. The catalog descriptions tell which ones are recommended for cutting gardens. This explains how to grow each kind. The flowers are arranged alphabetically by common name. In only 12 years this catalog has grown to 124 pages.


Bluestone Perennials

As the name indicates this company specializes in perennials. However, it also sells a number of clematis and shrubs as well, including some that are especially suitable for cut flowers. These include butterfly bushes, hydrangeas, and purple beautyberry.

The perennials are arranged alphabetically by Latin name. For common names, refer to the index. The catalog descriptions explain which varieties are good for cut and dried flowers. This is one of the most extensive perennials catalogs. The 2009 catalog has 81 pages.


Bountiful Gardens

Bountiful Gardens specializes in heirloom and open pollinated seeds. These are untreated. Some of the seeds are organic. In addition to vegetables and herbs, this catalog devotes a section to flowers. Under each catalog description, this tells which ones are suitable for cut or dried flowers.

The plants are organized alphabetically by common name. These include tried-and-true ones, such as the Mexican sunflower and cosmos. The catalog descriptions explain how to grow each one. In addition to individual flower seeds, they also have a cutting garden mix.


Burpee

Burpee is a great catalog for those with cutting gardens. The 2009 edition has 135 pages with nearly half being devoted to flowers. In addition to seeds, Burpee also sells starter plants of some varieties.

This has lots of cut flower varieties, including a collection of lisianthus, a collection of zinnia, and a collection of sunflowers. In addition, they have a special cutting garden collection with nine packs of seeds, plant markers, and growing instructions.

In the catalog, the plants are arranged alphabetically by common name. The descriptions explain which ones to use for cut flowers.


Fedco

Fedco issues several catalogs a year. The spring 2009 edition has 137 pages. In addition to seeds, they also sell tubers, bulbs, and trees. Fedco specializes in organic seeds. This has a wide selection of flower seeds with separate sections for annuals and perennials. This has lots of different sunflower varieties. It also has a section for everlastings. The catalog also has lots of different grains and grasses used in floral arrangements.

These are arranged alphabetically by common name. Under each flower description, this indicates which ones are used as cut flowers. This even has tips on harvesting, conditioning, and caring for cut flowers.
