X Factor UK Final Update

Well they did it! Girl band Little Mix was hastily fashioned - though some may say, patched together - by spanking new X Factor judge, celebrity alchemist and fellow canary, Tulisa. With a very unpromising start, this fledgling quartet of female warblers has actually gone on to win X Factor UK, 2011, before a crowd of 10,000 at Wembley Arena, as well as 10 million riveted TV viewers.

The first girl group ever to win X Factor, they are also the first group to win, period. As quantity doesn’t always suggest quality, and as ‘America’s Sweetheart’ Paula Abdul soon discovered in the inaugural 2011 season of X Factor USA, groups just have a hard time on X Factor.

Big on back story, this shiny, high profile show favors plucky individuals, fighting the odds, and singing for their showbiz survival. It’s just that bit trickier to enthuse the masses with targeted empathy for a bunch of celebrity wannabees, when it’s hard to work out who is who. It was a stroke of genius, then, to personalize Little Mix by putting the girls’ names on their tops in Part Two, broadcast on the final Sunday of this X Factor Final weekend.

Though ex – X Factor UK boy bands JLS and One Direction have gone on to fan-enflamed pop stardom, still they didn’t win. That accolade was just waiting in the wings for the girls. After creating her own band of 'Little Muffins', as she fondly referred to them, Tulisa banged on about girl-power all season, conjuring the great Spice Girls, and styling Perrie, Jade, Jesy and Leigh-Anne as quirky and unchallenging, as opposed to sexy and alienating. She had thousands of young fans to cultivate!

And boy did it work. The girls have all done good, then. Little Mix is in da mix, upfront, in your face and set for fame. Oh, and never again will anyone say ‘Tulisa Who?’ - it’s Contostavlos, by the way, and she made her own bid for fame with London based hip-hop band, N-Dubz.

Let’s hope Little Mix don’t start to shed the puppy fat, together with their own cute appeal, and can continue to capitalize on what they do best. Refreshingly, and here’s another first in the history of X Factor girl bands – they can really sing.
