Beyond the Beatles, George contributed his talents with solo performances, and in concert with his compatriots Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and Roy Orbison (otherwise known as the Traveling Wilburys). His career was no less significant then McCartney and Lennon.
People often measure a "star's" worth by the lifetime achievements and awards earned within the industry, but the true measure of a person's life is the hearts that they have touched. George not only touched the hearts of his many, many, many fans who found humor, joy, comfort, tears, happiness and a plethora of other emotions in the words and melodies of his musical compositions but he also brought joy to the hearts of his peers with his friendship, kindness and love of all creation.
Many of his long term friends and peers are planning to come together in a tribute for their departed friend on the anniversary of his death. The concert is being organized by Eric Clapton, Olivia Harrison, and Dhani Harrison (George's only son). It will take place on the November 29th at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Material World Charitable Foundation originally funded by George's generosity to support charities who help the poor and especially children. George's widow Olivia hopes the concert will reach beyond the confines of the Royal Albert Hall and touch his spirit.
The line up for the tribute concert is telling of the respect and friendships George earned during his lifetime. Clapton, a long time friend of Georges, is arranging the set list and line up of performers. The concert is expected to feature a mix of George's compositions and his best loved songs. Performers will be backed by an Orchestra led by Michael Kamen.
The all star line up includes Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty, Leon Russell, Jools Holland, Joe Brown, Eric Idle, Jim Keltner, Ravi Shankar and of course, Eric Clapton. Not yet confirmed are appearances from Bob Dylan and Peter Frampton. Monty Python's Flying Circus will also take part in the tribute adding their own unique style of entertainment. The sold out concert will be filmed and is expected to a air in a special TV tribute in early 2003.
