St Lucia is a verdant green, mountainous island most famous by its two giant mountains protruding from the sea, the Piton Mountains. Named as a UNESCO World Heritage site, they draw travelers from all over the world to hike, photograph and bathe in the fabulous mineral rich waterfalls at their base.
St Lucia is home to many beautiful, rare indigenous birds. Hiking trails abound throughout the island, but it is very reasonable these days to own your own piece of this virgin soil. My family, who were brought to the island as indentured slaves from India, has 2 ½ acres available for only $60,000 US. Unlike African slaves, the individuals brought from India to work the fields were promised land in return for their labor. This piece of land is one which was acquired by my husband’s great grandfather in this manner. It has never been inhabited or built on. The only changes that have taken place on this land, ever, are the planting of fruit, nut and spice trees which over time are now abundant. The volcanic soil is so rich, you need to only spit a seed from your mouth and it will practically grow by itself.
There is a river which flows right along this St Lucia property line that is cool, pure and clean. Jump in and catch your own crayfish or just take a cool swim. You could choose to float downstream all the way to the ocean, just 5 minutes away by car. Although the land is near the mountain top, it sits low and flat in a slight valley, a perfect place to build your eco home or lodge, well protected from hurricanes or storms. St Lucia sits far below the hurricane band which hits the Caribbean every year from Africa. Because of this, it is one of the few islands which can boast massive trees over a hundred years old. The area is covered with mango, pineapple, nutmeg, bay, almond, grapefruit, papaya, cashew, mahogany, five-finger fruit, lime, orange, cinnamon, cocoa and coffee. The “weeds” are all utilized as herbal medicines and in teas such as camphor, citronella and bay leaf. We even have trees that (I have yet to find the English name) has a vine, when tied around your waist will alleviate back pain!
In this area of southern St Lucia, 10 minutes from the Hewanorra International Airport, the local villages are mostly made up of farmers and fishermen. Cost of living is fairly reasonable. Living as we do, ecologically minded, it can be downright cheap! Our electric bill runs about $64, water $18, phone/internet package $45 and cable TV is $22. That’s $150 for all utilities a month. I would venture to guess your electric bill alone is at least this much, probably more! Now we have an air conditioner, but haven’t yet even installed it in our current home as we get such a nice cool breeze and fans are all we seem to need. We use propane for our gas stove and that is another $10 a month for a tank. We do not have a heated water system, but rather utilize the warmth of the day to bathe and wash dishes and clothes. I have a brand new clothes dryer that I have never even used as we dry our clothes on a line outdoors for free! We grow all of our own fruits and vegetables and fish from the sea when possible. But one could easily purchase a whole tuna from a local fisherman for only $2.20 a pound. It is delicious.
