Step 1: Decide if you are going to write full time or part time. This is an important thing to decide right off the bat. Two things to consider are: First, do you have another means of income coming in? If you do you can start off as fast or slow as you would like. If you do not, than by all means, sit down and figure out what the least amount of time is that you have free to devote to your writing. Writer's have launched satisfying and successful careers with as little as 15 minutes a day, a few days per week.
Step 2: Once you know the answer to step 1, take some time to decide what category or genre of nonfiction writing your want to write in. If you click back to my main page (simply click on Nonfiction Writing at the top of the page) go to the section called: Careers in Nonfiction. Spend some time reading about the different categories of nonfiction writing you see. Then take some time to ponder on which ones are of interest to you.
You should write what you know, or write what you are passionate about. If you love your topic it will be easier for your writing career to flourish. If you decide that you want to write nonfiction books. Either to have published by a publishing company or to self-publish yourself. Than I also suggest you take a look at the section called Categories / Genres. This will give you an idea of the many types of nonfiction books you can write.
You are doing great!
Step 3: Next you should set up a writing goal for yourself. This has two parts to it. First you decide how many words you want to write at each writing session. You can choose to write 500, 1000, 1500 or 2,000 words each time you write to begin with. After you have a few days or weeks under your belt of accomplishing this goal you can tweak it up or down depending on what you are comfortable with and your finish goal time. Second, you decide whether you will write each day, a few days a week, one day week. Make sure this fits into the rest of your life. Be sure to take into consideration not just other work responsibilities if you have them. But to also make your family or down time for yourself a priority as well.
Step 4: You are ready to plunge in! Really. Begin writing during your scheduled writing times in the nonfiction career area you choose above. Go through the different step-by-step articles in that section to help guide your path.
Give yourself some time to get used to all of this. Then keep following the steps and you will be seeing success before you know it.
