Canadian Skaters Get the Gold

After quite a bit of controversy, the IOC has awarded the gold medal to the Canadian pair David Pelletier and Jamie Sale. They will be allowing Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, the Russian pair, to keep theirs as well.

This ruling comes after accusations of voting fraud during the Winter Olympics figure skating pairs. The Russians made several errors during the event, while the Canadians skated flawlessly. Marie-Reine Le Gougne, one of the judges who is from France, has admitted that she was pressured by her federation to vote for the Russians. She has been suspended indefinitely.

After the investigation, the IOCīs executive board voted 7-1 to give the gold to the Canadians. While the Canadians are happy that this got resolved relatively quickly, the pair still wishes it had been able to stand on the podium for the actual ceremony.
