Consider A Bed Bumper For your Child with Autism

My twelve-year-old son is constantly in motion, wacking walls along the way. All the walls are white in this rental home we have resided in for over ten years. I try to paint them a few times each year.

Since we live in Los Angeles, which is deemed to be earthquake country, there are limited decorations on the walls near and around the beds. A few months ago we got one of the Bed Bumpers for Big Kids from Kidz Comfort. I really liked the image on this page showing the boy sleeping on his bed hugging his teddybear and thought this would make a nice addition to the bedroom decor.

There are several designs to choose from for a boy or girl. My son wanted outer space and I liked the Dinosaur design. Currently the designs include - blue sports, construction truck, pink butterflies, owls on purple, hot shot sports, grey race car and nursery rhymes.

This can keep the chill off the wall while your kid is sleeping and can be used as a form of decoration on the bare wall as seen in the above picture.

There are three adhesives with velcro along the top portion of the Bed Bumper to be pressed on the wall. You will need one hour for this to stick, plus a total of twenty-four hours for it to achieve maximum strength. We have those popcorn walls which could use a fourth velcro adhesive to stay intact on the wall.

The bottom portion of the bumper should be partially tucked between the bed and wall. I did have a hard time getting the Bed Bumper to stay inline and not become crooked. I have the bed up against the wall so we had to be gentle in pulling bed out for my son to get into it. He enjoyed the comfort of the bumper along the wall, but it did poke him from the middle of the bumper and that disturbed him. I believe a fourth velcro strip would keep the bumper more level on the wall and not poke out.

After a few days I opted to test out the Bed Bumper with my nonverbal son and use it in a similar fashion to a headboard. That afternoon when Matthew returned home from school he handed me the Bed Bumper idicating he did not want it up on the wall behind his pillow.

I found the Bed Bumper easier to attach behind the bed instead of alongside it, but that did not work out so the Bed Bumper has been a fixture on the living room couch where my older son and the cat enjoy it extensively.

Nick says that the cat really appreciates the Bed Bumper and it keeps you cozy and warm. I think it would be good for traveling and for grandparents to have in spare bedroom for a child. This is also removable so if the child prefers not to have it up against the wall in summer months.

The premise is that this keeps child safe from banging elbow into the wall when tossing and turning at night. "If your child is resting comfortably, so can you." The benefit of a nice cheerful design is helpful for when kids are sick in bed. The velcro fasteners are hook and loop. You will need to remove the wrapper before sealing it against the wall.

I like that this is made in the U.S.A. and the fabric is 100% cotton with 100% polyester fill. The measurement is 70" x 18" that fits standard and full sized beds. You can see that by the pictures alongside and behind beds in my home. It is too long for the couch, but we wrap it around the side of the couch behind pillows.

Kidz Comfort also sells Toddler Size Travel Pillows in the space design and classic dinosaur design plus many others to choose from.
