Possessed Students in Uganda
The Sir Tito Winyi Primary School in Uganda was forced to close in March of 2008 because the students were possessed by demons.
Headmaster Vincent Kitende, was quoted as saying, “the situation is bad. About 100 pupils are totally mad.”
Children were ripping off their clothes and throwing them at other students, chasing each other and teachers, throwing rocks, banging doors, and jumping around hysterically.
One observer reported to the media that the “whole scene was chaotic and weird.” Parents were requested to come to the school to pick up their children and take them home.
Evidently a similar situation occurred in 2007, which, according to the state-run newspaper, “affected more than 200 students.” At that time, “four Hoima residents were arrested for casting a spell on the school.” These residents are purportedly involved in a land dispute with the school.
Many people living in the area believe the children are being affected by the political situation in Uganda. There are those that think “devils have taken over due to the lack of Christian morals practiced by some areas.”
Prayer sessions were conducted at home each morning with parents before sending their children to school. Christian leaders prepared “special petitions” to offer in church on Sunday. Psychologists and psychiatrists were brought in to help with the situation. Exorcisms were performed. Special prayers were conducted by Rev. Geoffrey Matata of Kiziranfumbi Church in the area.
Many people living in the area of the school believe there are those with the power to cast spells on other people. This type of witchcraft is called “Eddogo.”
An individual was accused of spell-casting, and taken to court over the matter, but released due to lack of evidence.” Interestingly, the court process was shut down because students became “hysterical before the judge.”
“The assistant chief administrative officer for Buhaguzi County, Hannington Asaba, said prayers would be held to solve the matter.” He asserts the possibility that Tito Winyi (the King of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom from 1934 to 1967) “is unhappy about something.”
